AMERICAN CITY NEVADA
A City of Concrete
Unoccupied Ghost Town
Circa 1920 to Present
American city, also known as American Flat was mostly a company town. Although there were several claims surrounding and occupying the Flat, most of the towns residents were employed by the super cyanide mill. Built to process the tailings left behind by earlier exploits over a century prior, the mill only operated for four years before the company enterprise closed it down due to expenses and funding issues.
The mill buildings, being constructed of cement are all that remains of the tales past, the wooden homes and businesses that supported the small town have all been destroyed or used for their materials or firewood. In 2002 or 2003 I spoke with a resident of Virginia City who warned me not to attempt to visit American City. He advised me that the site had been taken over by drug addicts and transients. My recent visit confirmed his concerns, as I noticed drug needles, makeshift camps and bedding throughout the area.
American City is somewhat of a spooky place to visit, and could easily be used as the site of any horror flick. The large cement super structure is all but gutted out. There are stairways leading to no where, large basements filled with stagnate water, and the walls are full of graffiti.
