BALLARAT CALIFORNIA
Ball of what?

Occupied Historic Town
Inyo County
Circa 1897

Ballarat is located at the foot of the infamous Panamint Mountains along the Western edge of Death Valley, and has been called home by some of the worlds most intriguing characters like, Seldom Seen Slim and gunman “Jim” Sherlock. The town was named after an Australian boom town from the 1800’s. The Ballarat post office was established in 1897; however there were residents here long before the post office arrived. Because of its location, Ballarat quickly became the supply and staging town for many mining camps and claims within the Panamint.

Today’s visitor would find several adobe and wood building ruins. There is also a primitive camp ground; a small museum and makeshift store where there is always a cold drink waiting. The stores operator and town site caretaker who are very familiar with the area and its history, also offer a shower for a small fee.

Just as the town of the late 1800’s played a key roll as a staging and supply locale, Ballarat continues as a staging location for explorers and off roaders alike. On any spring and fall day weekend the Panamint Valley becomes a camping haven for many off road enthusiasts.
